About FERS Retirement Calculator

A free, independent estimator that helps US federal employees understand their FERS pension before making a retirement decision.

Why we built this calculator

Federal employees face a high-stakes decision: when to retire, which retirement type to choose, and how survivor benefits change the math. Official tools exist, but few explain the rules behind the numbers. This project pairs a working calculator with plain-English explanations of High-3, MRA+10, the FERS Supplement, COLA, and deferred versus postponed retirement, so you can see both the estimate and the reasoning.

How the estimates work

The calculator runs entirely in your browser using the standard FERS formula: your High-3 average salary multiplied by years of creditable service and a 1% multiplier, rising to 1.1% if you retire at age 62 or later with at least 20 years of service. Advanced inputs cover unused sick leave (converted at 2,087 hours per year), military buyback deposits, special category multipliers for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and air traffic controllers, and survivor benefit elections. The FERS Supplement is approximated from your projected Social Security benefit at age 62, scaled by your FERS service divided by 40.

These rules come from OPM's FERS computation guidance and the underlying statute. The formulas and multipliers are checked by hand against worked examples before every release.

Editorial standards

Content is reviewed against OPM's FERS Computation guidance at least once a year, and the review date is updated whenever material changes are made — the latest review is shown in the page metadata. Corrections are welcome: if you find a formula or rule that does not match official guidance, contact us and we will verify and fix it.

Independence and funding

This site is independently operated and completely free. There are no accounts, no paywalls, and no data collection from the calculator itself — your inputs never leave your browser. The site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the US Office of Personnel Management or any government agency. For official benefit determinations, always work with your agency HR office and OPM.
